The Mystery of “May 19th, 2013 Expect us”.

You know that feeling you get when you just hear about something and then you realize people have been talking about it for years. Yeah, I’m having one of those moments right now. So today, May 19th, something is/was suppose to happen. You may have seen the whole “5/19/13 Expect Us” stuff around the internet recently. Somehow I only learned of this a few days ago, but I was curious as to what it was. Well, I came across two possible answers for the origins and meaning behind this date. The first theory suggests that today was suppose to be the end of the world. Think December 21st, 2012 only it was 2013’s version. Well, obviously that didn’t happen. I believe the reason people believed this was today was the end of the world was because of something people “interpreted” from the Bible. Now I don’t if the whole “interpretation from the Bible” thing is correct, but either way people still seemed to think today was another apocalypse day. The second theory, and the most popular, is that this was all a hoax that originated on 4chan, specifically /b/. It was believed that sometime back in 2010, /b/ picked up on the date May 19th, 2013  and decided to create a fake “apocalypse-type” date thing just to mess with people. The website “5-19-13.com” helped spread this rumor around. The website just showed the date along with the message “Expect Us” and a faint picture of a woman with black eyes starring at you. People believe that this was all done just to prove how easy it was to trick the masses, that and/or they just wanted to simply mess with people. So those are the two “theories” about what and why this date was so significant to some. Now obviously the “Bible apocalypse interpretation” theory is the wrong one. This was simply a 4chan joke that succeeded. Though I do think it’s funny that today, of all days, was the day that Yahoo bought Tumblr. So I guess to us here on Tumblr, there was a mini-apocalypse that happened, but soon we all felt better when we realized that Yahoo will have no control over Tumblr what-so-ever. (Thank goodness) So that’s what this whole “May 19th” crap was about. Not aliens, not the end of the world, just a prank. But, question of the day. What is you’re apocalypse survival plan?
